Workshops

Join us for a variety of workshops over the course of the exhibition with some of our exhibiting artists...

Saturday 12th July - Family Day

We will be hosting a variety of arts workshops on our Family Day, Saturday 12th July, bring a picnic and join in the fun!

Find the Fairy Folk

The Highwaymans Gallery is set in rural Suffolk and sits in very pleasant grounds and surrounding the property is a tree walk, where you can discover the woodland creatures made by some of the artists. Follow the trail, and discover some fairy folk, strange goblins and elves, and an insect or two. Record your findings and your efforts will be rewarded with a little prize.

We will also have storytelling beneath the boughs of the trees, with tales of fairy folk abound.

Make you own Fairy Folk

There will also be arts and crafts workshops for you to make and take home a creature of your own. Parents and carers go free, and we are charging £2.50 per child to cover material costs.

Plein Air Painting

Join artist Susan Abbs painting the beautiful grounds of Highwaymans Gallery.

Susan’s art is all about light.  Learn how to capture the beauty of sunlight and the essence of a landscape rather than the many details.  She will paint along on her own canvas, showing and describing how to draw up the composition, colour mixing, as well as how to use different tools.  She will be painting with acrylics, but you can bring any medium you like.

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned painter, just bring your painting/drawing materials and join Susan for a relaxing morning painting outside in the sunshine (hopefully!).

10am - 1pm For ages 12 to adults.  Free.

Crafty Creators

Crafty Creators will provide activities to encourage you to make/create the initial of your name in a different medium of your choice from the selection. There will be several options and you will look at different fonts and the writing of names in different ways.

You can also make your own mini story books using drawn pictures or the written word.

This workshop is charged at £2.50 per child. (Children under the age of 12 must be supervised.)

Create your own Imaginary Characters

Who are your favourite story book characters? What do they look like and what do you like about them? During this workshop you will have the opportunity to create and draw your own special character using a variety of art materials. Cambridge based artist and illustrator Rachel Thompson will be on hand to guide you through a series of simple questions to help you design your character and to think about what qualities they have, or even if they have any special powers... You will be free to use any of the materials provided and will be able to take away a colourful illustration at the end of the session.

This workshop is charged at £2.50 per participant and is aimed at children between the ages of 4-12, but all ages welcome. (Children under the age of 12 must be supervised.)
